It is right to wonder what advantages there are to joining a running and athletic club. Afterall, anyone can ‘go for a jog’ from their front door. Bolton United Harriers & AC can think of several reasons to join us:
Expert Coaching – Benefit from the knowledge of UKA-qualified coaches in all athletic disciplines. Training groups are structured principally on the basis of age and event/distance preference.
Youth Development – Interested or even excel at athletics at school? If you are a younger athlete, with talent, determination and dedication, we’ll try to help you be the “new kid on the block” in regional, national and world athletics. Aim high and we’ll back you up!
Performance Enhancement – New to the area? Experienced runner or Track & Field competitor? We welcome second-club claimants and those already ‘into’ the sport and are sure our coaches can increase your levels of performance. We certainly guarantee a well organised club of stature!
Not-Elitist – We are a relaxed, friendly bunch welcoming all abilities, shapes, sizes and ages. We hereby bust the myth that you need to achieve a “qualifying standard” to join an athletic club! You are also never too old to join.
Fun Learning – For very young athletes (Hawks – those aged 6 to 8), our coaches develop the core skills for all athletic activities through fun games.
Talent Discovery – You may not even know that you or your child is good at a specific event. Years of coaching experience can spot this over a range of activities.
New Sport – We’ve been running, jumping and throwing since 1908, so can help whatever your athletics’ interest. Post-2012 Olympics, you may want to try something new – talk to our coaches.
No Pressure – Many of our members never compete in races or competitions, and that’s just fine with us. With time, we’re sure the confidence to wear the ‘blue vest’ will emerge anyway.
Event Participation – Experience great team ethic and camaraderie, if you get the buzz to progress.
Cheap Racing – Discounted entry to all UK Athletics races and competitions. Some races and competitions are also ONLY available to ‘affiliated’ club members.
Reserved ‘Big Race’ Entries – As a large, nationally-ranked Club, BUH&AC is allocated a number of guaranteed entries to some ‘big races’ which have limited entries or operate on ballots e.g. London Marathon. There is a policy for distribution to our members.
Group Sessions – Have fun and a natter whilst you train – it makes a difference to jogging alone with the MP3 tunes!
Motivational Training – Exercise with others of similar ability to keep your motivation high. If your training group does venture away from the track, you will never be left behind in somewhere you may not know. So leave these fears at home, along with your handheld GPS (or map, for the old-school!).
Safe Exercise – Running at night-time can be hazardous no matter how much fluorescent clothing, reflective patches and flashing lights you wear. Train with us on the brightly-lit track in halogen-fuelled technicolor.
Interesting Routes – For those interested in endurance, we know a variety of on and off-road runs, from easy flat to challenging ‘undulations’! With its many trails, good use is made of Leverhulme Park’s setting, particularly in the lighter Summer months. There are frequent, impromptu jogs arranged, especially at the weekend. Get to know us and come along.
Warm-ups & Cool-downs – Stretching technique and instruction to prevent injury.
Multi-day Meets – Normal training sessions are on Tuesdays AND Thursdays. Come to either or both! There are some on other days depending on which coach you train with.
All Weather – We’re active, whether it’s on the indoor track or outdoor in the sun, wind, rain or snow…standard northern British weather!
Clothing/Equipment Discounts – Some local running outlets offer discounts to BUH&AC members.
Social ‘Refuelling’ – Enjoy social events throughout the year and make new friends! Athletics is not just about training and showing off your new lycra (!). There’s an active social life to be had with BUH&AC.
