Bolton’s Tom Lancashire maintained his push for Olympic selection at 1500m today at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. His time of 3:37:77 was a season’s best for the 30-year-old from Bromley Cross – more than 2 seconds quicker than his last outing in Ostrava, but was still short of the 3:36.20 qualifying standard. Having settled second-from-last at the end of the opening 300m, he worked through the gears, moving up with each lap, though fellow Brit Jake Wightman pipped him for ninth in 3:37:53. It shows continued improvement ahead of the British Championships in three weeks’ time – come on, Tom!
Kenya’s Asbel Kiprop won in 3:29:35 – a 2016 world leading time and the fastest ever on British soil.
