Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium saw two Bolton athletes compete at the National competition:
Tom Lancashire finished 6th in the 1500m. His 3:51.78 came after sitting in at the back in the opening couple of laps. It looked like the correct decision as jostling amongst the pack bordered on a scrap with pushing, wayward spikes and stumbles, but he left too much to do in the final 200m. It all came after qualifying from his heat in second (3:49.08); if he can build on his spring and summer period of injury-free training, it is hoped Lancashire can approach his 3:33.96 best again, before focussing on the 5000m for 2016.
Chris Mann jumped a Season’s Best 2.06m in finishing 10th of 14 at his first major senior championships. Whilst he hasn’t yet improved on his 2014 PB of 2.08m, it is perhaps the highlight of a fine season for the 19-years-old, especially given the invite’s short four days’ notice. It was certainly a confidence booster too, as all athletes had cleared at least 6cm more than Chris this season. Coaches Brian Hall and Shaun O’Donnell commented that to end up Northern Athletics champion, a AAA U23 silver and now this appearance on the national stage, his trajectory is certainly right! Olympic bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz’s 2.28m was head and shoulders above the rest for the win.
