The current UK Athletics Coach Education Programme places a great emphasis on a coaches’ competence rather than knowledge (what they can do rather than what they know). Through this we draw out the importance of the “how” skills rather than just the “what” skills, in particular by integrating the theory into the practice. To enable a coach to progress we aim to create more opportunities to put their coaching skills into practice with the ready availability of feedback. A mentoring programme is an integral part of the awards from Level 2 upwards. The awards are based around a 5 level structure, starting with the Level 1 – Assistant Coach Award. The first level is predominantly based around coaching skills, giving the coach the knowledge of “how” to coach, along with a basic introduction to the key principles of the event group areas. Level 2 builds on the knowledge gained at Level 1, includes a whole day on a specific group of events, and qualifies and insures the coach to work with athletes unsupervised. At Level 3 and 4 topics are covered in greater depth and the coach has the opportunity to choose whether they want to specialise in performance or development coaching. For those individuals who feel they have attained or completed competencies taught in UK Athletics qualifications, either through direct coaching experience or as an athlete participating at elite level, then the application form below, gives those individuals the opportunity to be assessed. If successful, coaches can be fast-tracked onto later levels of the Coaching Pathway. Alongside this pathway there are two leaders awards: Children in Athletics is a leaders course that introduces the leader/coach to activities that are suitable to lead a group of children (aged 8 – 13) in athletics type activities, specifically using soft play equipment. Fitness in Running and Walking is a leaders course intended for people involved in leading groups who take part in activities such as running and walking.
All of the courses are intended to be flexible, with a
modular approach to enable coaches to transfer skills that they have gained
through other experiences, and to ensure that we are able to meet the needs
and requirements of all coaches, and the athletes they coach. Taken from ukathletics.net/coaches/coach-education/ |
