Bolton Harriers scooped up the top awards in this year's Sport Health and inclusion awards at Reebok Stadium on Friday. The event which was supported by Cllr Walter Hall the Mayor of Bolton and Sophie Hancock winner of silver medal in the world para-olympic championships and BBC personality in trekking across Africa in 'Beyond Boundaries'. The club and its members received three top awards - Club of the Year - Achiever of the Year, and, Young Volunteer of the Year. In addition the club had further nominations for the Lifetime Achievement and Achiever of the Year awards.
Shaun O'Donnell picked up the "Bolton Wanders Football Club - Club of the Year" award on behalf of Bolton Harriers. The award is in recognition of the success of the club in attaining the nationally recognised UK Athletics Clubmark: together with the club's work in the community developing athletics in schools though its very successful indoor leagues and primary schools championship, its role in the community in supporting events such as the race for life; and enhancing sporting opportunities for all with its women's running group.
Tom Lancashire was away at University in the USA, so was not available to pick up his award as the 'Serco Sports Achiever of the Year' in person. Tom has won national titles and has competed for Great Britain in World and European Junior Championships. In 2006 he broke the four minutes mile indoors and a magnificent time of 1.45.4 for the 800m.
Michael O'Donnell was awarded one of the new awards the 'Connextions Young Volunteer of the Year' in recognition of young people who play an active part in volunteering to assist at sporting events. Michael has assisted at many athletics events including being the 'hare' in the Race for Life. Ensuring that the participants do not lose their way. In addition, Michael has assisted at numerous Bolton Harriers and School Events in the sporthall athletics league, on the track, road and cross-country. Michael has also undertaken recognised coaching courses.
Mike Freary was nominated for the 'Spirit of Sport Lifetime Achievement Award' for his contribution to Sport over a period of 47 years. Mike has a long pedigree of success in athletics, winning national titles, setting national records on the track and achieving a 7th position in the European 10,000 track championships. Mike has been a inspiration to young distance athletes at Leverhulme Park where he coaches a group of young hopefuls. Mike is always quick to volunteer to assist in club activities on the road, cross country or track. He has also assisted with the development of the club's women's development group.
Brian Hall was also a nominee from the club for the Serco Sports Achiever of the Year. Brian has an unparalleled record as a dedicated member of the club. He has been unbeaten in league competition in the high jump in the last 5 years. Brian had a very successful season in 2006. He set a northern league record of 2.14cm in winning the League match at Leverhulme Park, Brian went on to increase his personal best to 2.16m in the British senior championships where he was placed 5th in the country.
