Phil Marsden ran the 50th Fairfield Horseshoe – a classic Lakeland fell race taking in 10 miles and 3000ft of climb. The perfect conditions of the LDL were replicated and, after starting too quickly (not knowing exactly how hard 3000ft of climbing is), he made it to the top in 8th place.
Unfortunately, taking a few bad lines on the descent he lost four places on the way down and had nothing left on the flat to make them up. Clocking 1.28.30 for 12th place of the 317 field was the result.
Carl Bell of Keswick won in a time of 1.19.45.
Elsewhere, there was yet again BUH&AC representation in all the age-groups at the Malham Kirkby FR, the latest FRA Junior Championships fixture. Round 3 was held at scenic Malham, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Adjacent to the tower cliff of Malham Cove, Lily Philbin once again led the way for the junior Blue Vests, overhauling two local athletes in a sprint finish to capture gold for the second U10 race in a row. Harvey Kenny ran well too, taking 23rd place overall in a field of 51. Prior to this, younger brother Sam Philbin ran boldly to finish 21st out of 51 in the U8s, his highest finish to-date.
Emily Petch continued to show improving form for the U12s, whilst Molly Philbin ran strongly for 15th U14 girl. Leah Rushworth ran bravely after twisting her ankle on the ascent, whilst Rachel Bailey showed all her endurance and speed downhill, capturing 7th place in the U18 girl’s race.
